What a Doula is
The word "doula" comes from ancient Greek, meaning "a woman who serves."
It’s an ancient Greek word that refers to the female slave who would help the mother of the household through pregnancy, childbearing and the young parenting years. Today, "doula" refers to a professional trained to provide emotional, physical, and informational support to women throughout their pregnancy, birth and the early postpartum period.
A doula is one Part of the birth team consisting of your doctor and/or midwife and labor nurse.
What a Doula Does
A birth doula is a non-medical professional that provides educational, emotional, and physical support before, during, and after childbirth. Continuous support during labor is shown to improve the overall health of mother and baby. It has been associated with shortened labor time, lower need for medical interventions or pain relief, and a reduction in the risk of cesarean section. Our main role is to help laboring women remain comfortable and calm using various methods. A doula can empower the mom to have a voice in their labor and delivery.
What a Doula is Not
A doula is not medically trained and does not diagnose or perform any medical tasks or procedures. They may not speak to medical staff on behalf of the mother. They may not recommend or suggest medical procedures. They may not interfere with any medical care provider as they provide care for mother and baby. They may not impose their personal preferences on mother or make mother feel pressured to make decisions.
